I would have something to say on the page, but I have a small rant thing to babble about. This would probably be more full-blown, but it's long past the time since I was actually worked up enough to babble a lot about this, so I'll keep it brief.
Basically, it's about a concern I've had recently in terms of the spriting community and the obsessive fanservicesque characters which have been appearing around a lot recently. I've mentioned it to a few individuals on MSN, but I thought I'd bring the point out.
I know this may seem hypocritical of me, I have been known at times to have a somewhat perverse sense of humour (for example, the fanservicey one year anniversary, and Vas knocking someone out with her breasts), but I've generally tried to keep that in good humour. I mean, I'm not entirely against fanservice, but... well, I'm babbling, I'll cut across to the key point here;
I can name 2 female bisexual characters who are pretty much sex-crazed.
I can name 1 lesbian character who is also sex-crazed.
I can name 1 female bisexual, who, whilst not sex-crazed, is extremely flirtatious.
I can name 1 lesbian, who, whilst not exactly sex-crazed, is very much kink-based.
I cannot name a single other homosexual or bisexual character in the spriting community, at least, not off the top of my head (discluding any characters I own). And I have to say... really? Just... really? It kind of concerns me that in the spriting community the only characters who seem to be homo or bi are for peoples lesbian fanservice...
This wouldn't even be concerning if it wasn't for the fact they've all just been popping up recently, like an influx of the damn things.
But anyway, I've complained enough, and I hope for the sake of people on MSN who I've been making this point to, it means I'll stop complaining to them about it.
Oh yeah, before I forget, supposed to also remind people that in 3 days time the Shelia contest closes.
I'm guessing the Kink-based lesbian is my own character, Sam.
Well, I'll admit that I've cracked a kink joke or two, but I still have to admit that I'm rather insulted by this, especially since fan service (at least of my character) is far outweighed by yours.
But putting myself aside, I think you're still overreacting. Though I agree that gays/lesbians shouldn't exclusively be made for fan service, I'd like to point out that this isn't a recent event. Perhaps among the spriting community maybe, but this is a very widespread thing that's been going on, expecially on smackjeeves. It's merely leaking from the drawn community into the spriting one.
Some of us might not be aware, but Smack Jeeves is one of the biggest, if not THE biggest hub of gay and lesbian fanservice. Not only that, but also "hentai" style homosexual pornography. Just look up "boy love" in the search engine... or hell, just "bl" and see what comes up. "Girl Love" is less... prominent, but still there.
My point is, this stuff has been going on for a long time, and compared to most of that kind of fan service (concerning homosexuals) our community is relatively tame.
Besides, I've cracked like what, two fan service jokes? The Tails thing and the Mutsumi thing come to mind, though those were kind of a parody. Anyways, If anything her main character trait is her awareness of the fourth wall and perspective on herself knowing she's a fictional character.
I think it's just because the sex-crazed ones stand out more. If they're gay/bi without it being exaggerated, then there's a good chance it'll go over the heads of all the silly moron viewers. That, and sex sells.
I have two gay/bi characters. One is (I'm assuming) the aforementioned flirtatious-but-not-sex-crazed bisexual, but she does have her hidden depths that subvert the "lesbian slut" expectations. Of course it's not entirely apparent because I can't finish anything ever.
The other you wouldn't know was gay unless I spelled it out for you. Although at this point, he's not quite aware of it himself...
First of all, HockeyDude's comment is awesome. That is, assuming the other side actually ISN'T called the Conservators. If they are then it's marginally less funny...
Anyhow, I can safely say my two homosexual characters (one female, one male) are not fan-service sex-obsessed characters. In fact, both start the comic in the closet, and one of them, the male character, actually got my first serious comic dedicated to his being gay (It was all sad and emotional and crap like that)
However, I'm not a spriter. So I suppose if anything this kinda works in Dregan's favour...
